THE PROPERTIES OF THE STAR-FORMING INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM AT z=0.8–2.2 FROM HIZELS: STAR-FORMATION AND CLUMP SCALING LAWS IN GAS RICH, TURBULENT DISKS

چکیده
We present adaptive optics assisted integral field spectroscopy of nine Hα-selected galaxies at z=0.84–2.23 drawn from the HiZELS narrow-band survey. Our observations map the kinematics of these star-forming galaxies on ∼ kpc-scales. We demonstrate that within the ISM of these galaxies, the velocity dispersion of the star-forming gas (σ) follows a scaling relation σ ∝ Σ SFR + constant (where ΣSFR is the star formation surface density and the constant includes the stellar surface density). Assuming the disks are marginally stable (Toomre Q=1), this follows from the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation (ΣSFR =AΣ n gas), and we derive best fit parameters of n=1.34± 0.15 and A=3.4 −1.6× 10M⊙ yr kpc, consistent with the local relation, and implying cold molecular gas masses of Mgas =10 M⊙ and molecular gas fractions Mgas / (Mgas +M⋆)= 0.3± 0.1, with a range of 10 – 75%. We also identify eleven ∼ kpc-scale star-forming regions (clumps) within our sample and show that their sizes are comparable to the wavelength of the fastest growing mode. The luminosities and velocity dispersions of these clumps follow the same scaling relations as local Hii regions, although their star formation densities are a factor ∼ 15± 5× higher than typically found locally. We discuss how the clump properties are related to the disk, and show that their high masses and luminosities are a consequence of the high disk surface density. Scaling relations of star-forming regions: from kpc-sized clumps to H II regions
We present the properties of eight star-forming regions, or ‘clumps,’ in three galaxies at z ∼ 1.3 from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, which are resolved with the OH Suppressing InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph (OSIRIS) integral field spectrograph. Within turbulent discs, σ ∼ 90 km s−1, clumps are measured with average sizes of 1.5 kpc and average Jeans masses of 4.2 × 109 M , in total accounting...
متن کاملStar-Forming Galaxies at z ∼ 2: An Emerging Picture of Galaxy Dynamics and Assembly
In these proceedings, we summarize recent results from our “SINS” VLT/SINFONI integral-field survey, focusing on the 52 detected UV/opticallyselected star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2. Our Hα emission-line imaging and kinematic data of these systems illustrates that a substantial fraction (≥ 1/3) of these galaxies are large, rotating disks and that these disks are clumpy, thick, and forming stars ...

We present an investigation of clumpy galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 1.5 in the rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) using HST WFC3 broadband imaging in F225W, F275W, and F336W. An analysis of 1,404 galaxies yields 209 galaxies that host 403 kpc-scale clumps. These host galaxies appear to be typical star-forming galaxies, with an average of 2 clumps per galaxy and reaching a m...
متن کاملFormation of Massive Galaxies at High Redshift: Cold Streams, Clumpy Disks, and Compact Spheroids
We present a simple theoretical framework for massive galaxies at high redshift, where the main assembly and star formation occurred, and report on the first cosmological simulations that reveal clumpy disks consistent with our analysis. The evolution is governed by the interplay between smooth and clumpy cold streams, disk instability, and bulge formation. Intense, relatively smooth streams ma...
متن کاملStar Formation from Turbulent Fragmentation
Star formation is intimately linked to the dynamical evolution of molecular clouds. Turbulent fragmentation determines where and when protostellar cores form, and how they contract and grow in mass via accretion from the surrounding cloud material. Efficiency, spatial distribution and timescale of star formation in turbulent clouds are estimated by comparing numerical models of self-gravitating...
